The true meaning of wellness
When people think of the word “wellness” they automatically associate it with health- “To be well one must be healthy”.
The concept “wellness’ has different meanings for different people as the experience of being well is very subjective to the individual.
Being well could be as simple as “the absence of disease” to “living life well – as opposed to badly” the word invokes a different meaning for each individual.
According to The World Health Organization wellness is
“…a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” –
“a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential.” – The National Wellness Institute
Wellness is much more than being free of illness, it’s a positive change in our emotional, mental, physically and spiritual life that leads us to our full potential.
If you are wanting to live a higher quality of life it is crucial for you to maintain the optimum level of wellness.
Wellness matters because it is associated with everything we do, every emotion we feel, down to the food we eat.
To achieve wellness one must take a plan of action that will lead to the desired state.
Design a program that will help match your goals and change your behaviour.
An effective wellness program should include stress management, health, exercise and a nutritious eating plan.
It doesn’t have to be daunting… you can start small, and you can start today.
Chose an apple for your afternoon snack instead of a chocolate bar. Take the stairs instead of the lift, turn your phone off when you get home, tell your loved one how much they are loved.
A positive attitude will evoke a positive change… the change you need to achieve optimal wellness.
Good luck on your wellness journey!
You CAN DO IT!
