Tell tail signs you are gut UN-healthy. [and what you can do about it]

Did you know that 50% of Australian’s have an issue with their gut health? Whether its pain, reflux, bloating, IBS or niggling symptoms we can’t figure out, so many of us are having to eliminate entire food groups leading to deficiencies and for some of us this can develop into chronic health issues. According to the CSIRO (and Hippocrates back in the day…) a healthy digestive system is the gateway to health.

The state of your digestion can indicate so much about your overall health. That’s why naturopaths ask so many detailed questions about your digestion from top to bottom, literally! If your digestion isn’t working properly this can affect your ability to absorb and breakdown foods, vitamins, and minerals which can have a domino effect on effect on our energy, immunity, stress response, sleep quality, hormones, cognition and so much more.

WHAT ARE THE signs and symptoms that your digestion needs some TLC?

Look at the list below to see the signs…

  • Bloating
  • Reflux
  • Indigestion/heart burn
  • Halitosis or bad breath
  • Allergies
  • Nausea
  • Food intolerances
  • Skin rashes, dermatitis, eczema
  • Break outs
  • Excess flatulence
  • Abdominal pain
  • Chronic illness
  • Inconsistent frequency and forms
    of stools
  • Offensive smells
  • Mucous, blood and/or undigested
    food in the stool
  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue (especially after meals)
  • IBS
  • Anxiety
  • Low mood
  • Autoimmunity
  • Recurrent sickness

How is your gut health linked to all of these signs and symptoms?

Well, if you’re not breaking your food down properly, you can’t absorb the nutrients from your foods very well, then your body can’t use the nutrients very well creating deficiencies resulting in under functioning of our organs. This can lead to inflammation and if left unmanaged for long enough, it can create damage to the lining of our gastrointestinal tract (GIT) which then continues the cycle until balance can be restored.

Lining our intestines we have little villi (vil-eye) and on the villi we have little micro-villi or cilia (sil-e-a) which help to secrete enzymes and protect the lining, as well as assisting absorption and movement through the GIT. These little cilia and villi are quite sensitive and can be easily damaged from things like stress, not chewing properly, not breaking down our food properly and not eating the right balance of foods. This can result in damage to the protective mucosal layer resulting in a variety of symptoms as mentioned above. This can also compromise the way our immune systems respond which is why we often start with food sensitivity and before we know it, we’ve eliminated gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, meats, lactose, fructose and the list goes on; and often, we’re not feeling any better…

So what can you do about it?

See a naturopath of course 🤩

Your GP just doesn’t get the gut and git training that a Naturopath undergoes. Depending on your symptoms we can recommend testing suited to your individual needs. We will assess your digestive system functioning and assess the balance of your microbiome, the degree of inflammation, the gut-immune defences and how well you’re breaking down your food.

We will know exactly what herbs and nutrients we need to do
to nourish, repair and support you back to balance so that you can feel better and enjoy the foods we all love.

If you’d like to have a full gut and git assessment with Nicola to assist you with any of the symptoms above.

Then, we are just a click away…
