If you haven’t already, please read our Introduction to Detoxification article.  It gives you the basics on what detoxing is all about.

There are also a lot of detox products and plans in the market place which may or may not be of benefit to you.  Some of them may even prove to be harmful. 

One of the most important things to consider when choosing your detox plan is that you must have adequate amounts of dietary protein throughout the detox process.  Why? – your liver requires it to make the enzymes necessary for detoxification. This protein can be animal sourced from lean cuts of chicken or turkey; steamed or grilled fish; or vegetable based.  If you choose to use vegetable based proteins you must combine your vegetable sources properly to give you a complete protein mix – combinations of legumes, grains  and nuts & seeds. How much protein do you need? Ideally 0.9-1.0 g/kg of body weight.  So if you weigh 70 kgs then you should be having 63-70g protein per day.  Remember that 100g of steak doesn’t contain 100g of protein, rather about 35g of protein.
